Join us for an unforgettable alpine railway adventure, as we travel from flower filled meadows and emerald green hills to the Top of Europe and the James Bond mountain. Staying in a mountainside, village and with journeys on the fantastic Swiss railways, a delightful little steam train, cable cars and paddle steam cruisers across crystal clear lakes, this is a great way to discover the beauty and chocolate-box charm of the Bernese Highlands.
Day 1: Basel
We depart the travel centre early this morning and make our way from the Travel Centre to London St Pancras, where we board the Eurostar to Paris. From here we connect with the French Highspeed train, TGV inOui, to Strasbourg and connecting regional train to Basel.
Basel is our first stop as we stay in the lovely city for tonight. This is where 3 countries meet, in the middle of the River Rhine : France, Germany and Switzerland
Day 2 Interlaken and Wengen
Today we use the Swiss railways as we make our way to Interlaken where we have some free time to explore (our luggage will go ahead to our hotel). Interlaken, situated on a plain surrounded by magnificent mountains and between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, is our introduction to the spectacular scenery of this very special region of Switzerland.
Later in the day we continue on the the trains to the mountain resort of Wengen and the friendly Hotel Falken which is situated in a great location only 200m from the railway station.
Day 3: Scynige Platte – the flower Mountain
After breakfast at the hotel, we travel to Schynige Platte on a nostalgic cog wheel railway. This little mountain is known for its wild flowers and an Alpine Garden in which 650 species of plant can be foubnd! We will have free time to enjoy the great views of the Eiger , Mönch and Jungfrau Mountains before we return to the hotel in the afternoon.
Day 4: Jungfraujoch
Today we have included an excursion to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe. At 3,454 metres, this is Europe’s highest altitude railway station where you can enjoy breath-taking views. We return to the hotel this afternoon.
Day 5: Brienzer Rothorn Steam Train and Paddle Steamer Lake cruise
We travel by train to Brienz on the shores of Lake Brienz. Here we board the steam hauled Brienzer Rothornbahn up to the summit of the Rothorn. There is time here to enjoy the views and have lunch before we return again down the mountain. We travel by paddle steamer on Lake Brienz to Interlaken where we re-join the train and travel back to Wengen.
Day 6: Shilthorn.. 007 Mountain
Todays excursion takes us by cable car to the summit of Schilthorn, where you can enjoy amazing 360 degree views of more than 200 mountains, including Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau – on a clear day you may even catch a glimpse of Mount Blanc. Schilthorn achieved world fame when scenes for the James Bond film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service were shot here, featuring the revolving Piz Gloria Restaurant.
Day 7: Brünig Pass and Lucerne
Our excursion today sees us travelling to Lucerne via the Brünig Pass.
In a stunning lakeside setting and with an impressive mountainous panorama this beautiful city is an absolute delight to explore. Stroll across the Chapel Bridge ,see the historic houses decorated with frescoes which line the picturesque town squares in the car-free old town. Lucerne is a city of town squares and churches. Don’t forget to discover the watch shops, before we return to Wengen in the afternoon ,
Day 8 Return Journey
After breakfast it’s time for us to bid a fond farewell to the beauty of Switzerland. We retrace our steps to Basel and onward train connections to Strasbourg and Paris for the Eurostar to London St Pancras , where we are transferred back to Hugglescote.
