The 72 mile route between Settle and Carlisle takes you on a magnificent journey starting with the Yorkshire Dales and ending at the great border city of Carlisle.
Monday: We depart the Travel Centre this morning and make our way to Cumbria with a stop for lunch en route. We aim to arrive at the hotel late afternoon.
Tuesday: This morning we depart the hotel to take a ride on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Steam Railway. This award winning visitor attraction and Lake District icon runs for seven miles, a 40 minute journey from coast to mountain that traverses the nature reserves of the Ravenglass estuary before ascending through ancient woodlands towards the foothills of England’s highest mountains, the Scafell range.
Wednesday: Today we head for Longtown and drive along Liddesdale as we make our way to picturesque Kielder Water and Forest Park. We take a break at the visitor centre before continuing to Bellingham and Hexham, dominated by the Abbey overlooking the market square. This afternoon we return along the path of Hadrian's Wall, which stretched some 76 miles from the Tyne to the Solway.
Thursday: We drive into the Yorkshire Dales to Kirkby Lonsdale where a weekly market takes place. We then travel past the immense Ribblehead Viaduct to Settle where we have a spectacular train journey along the famous Settle to Carlisle line - the main railway line in the whole of England. Towering viaducts, bridges, long deep tunnels, lovingly kept station gardens all help to make this one of the best railway lines in the country. Our journey takes us along the whole line through majestic scenery to Carlisle where we re-join the coach for the ride back to Gilsland.
Friday: We bid a fond farewell to the hotel staff as we head back this morning to Hugglescote, arriving back late afternoon.
