With so many wonderful attractions on offer in Chester and North Wales, it’s difficult to decide which to visit first. This tour explores the region’s waterways, illustrating the important part it has played in our nation’s heritage.

One of our visits will be to Ness Botanical Gardens, founded in 1898 by Arthur Kilpin Bulley, a cotton merchant with a passion for gardens and plant collecting, the site covers some 64 acres and houses a large collection of plants originating from as far away as China, the Himalayas and Tibet.

Other highlights included: a 30 minute River Dee cruise, canal cruise across Pontcysllte Aqueduct and a ride on the Anderton Boat Lift.

Monday: We depart the Travel Centre this morning and make our way to North Wales with a stop en route. We aim to arrive at the hotel in the afternoon.

Tuesday: Today we begin the day with a visit to charming Chester starting with a tranquil 30 minute cruise on the River Dee with included commentary. There will also be time to explore the pretty medieval streets and city walls. After lunch, we travel to north to the Wirral Peninsula for a guided tour of the award winning Ness Botanical Gardens.

Wednesday: We venture south this morning for a canal cruise through the beautiful Vale of Llangollen and across the Pontcysllte Aqueduct, or ‘Stream in the Sky’, on a brightly coloured narrowboat. An interesting commentary gives visitors an insight into the history of the area and other canals in the UK. There will be some free time in Llangollen.

Thursday: Today we take a ride on the magnificent Anderton Boat Lift. Originally built in 1875, the structure lifts passengers aboard the elegant Edwin Clark boat from the River Weaver to the Trent and Mersey Canal high above. A comprehensive visitor centre houses an exhibition focusing on the lift’s history together with its control centre, so visitors can get close to the action. We then head to the pleasant market town of Nantwich.

Friday: We bid a fond farewell to the hotel staff as we head back to Hugglescote, arriving back in Hugglescote late this afternoon.
